Nkumba University now joins Kampala University in the final spot of the Nile Special University Football League (NSUFL). This comes after they held Uganda Martyrs University in a 1-all draw match played in Nkozi on Thursday, 10 November 2016. Nkumba had beaten Uganda Martyrs 1-0 during the first leg tie in Entebbe hence earning themselves a 2-1 goal average and a seat in the table of men.
Uganda Martyrs University’s first goal arrived at the 27th minute thanks to Douglas Owori who was always a potential threat right from the onset and it was hard to imagine why things never worked out for him in Entebbe. His first would have arrived in the 15th minute when he jumped over Etengu to meet a corner but he could only divert it over the cross bar.
In fairness to Nkumba, they played classy football but their shots collided with Uganda Martyrs bodies. The visitors continued to display ambition and Sserugawi barely finds the back of the net. He runs direct towards the hosts’ defence but his movement is terminated by the back four.
Just after the break, Nkumba was gifted with a free kick just at the edge of the 18 yard box and the home fans were undoubtedly under pressure only to be relieved when Sseruwagi fails to put the ball at the back of the net.
The long awaited goal for Nkumba University arrived at the 50th minute, thanks Martin Sserugawi who levelled matters. This was no ordinary goal as it piled an uphill task for the hosts.
Nkumba University after notching increased the tempo of their game and were starting to cause one or two problems for the hosts and it was clear that the Nkozi based boys were experiencing a bloody nose. Wasswa had a lot of time with the ball and worked an overlap with Sseruwagi who drills the ball miles away from the goal.
Nkumba University always stayed on top but it would deliver justice to say that Uganda Martyrs also started to take control of the match; may be they were saving themselves to follow the fate of Makerere University. A low ball from Owora finds Owori all on his own at the back post, but instead of making a simple touch, he rifles his shot off the cross bar.
At the 90th minute, this duo was still 1-all at would be no injustice for one to claim that Nkumba have earned themselves a spot in the finals. The Saints’ fate was sealed by the final whistle which found the game at level.
Nkumba University will play with Kampala University to bid for the title as Uganda Martyrs University fights for the third place with Makerere University.
