Defending champion Serena Williams beat Romanian third seed Simona Halep 6-3 7-6(5) to win the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Sunday 23, 2015 according to bbc
Halep had a good start breaking Williams in the opening game of the first set but the American recovered to win the final five games.
The Romanian third seed was hoping to beat Williams for the second time in less than a year after she upset her at the WTA Finals in October but the American was too strong to handle.
In the second and final set, the opponents traded early breaks but Williams took it to another level in the tie-break and wrapped the match up in 69 minutes.
“Thanks to Simona for playing such a great match,” said Williams..
“I don’t get great support everywhere I play, but I get so much love here I want to keep coming back.”
Halep said: “It was amazing for me to play in the final. Congratulations to the champion.”
It marked the fifth title of the year for Williams following wins at the Australian Open, in Miami and at the French Open and Wimbledon.
Williams goes into the US Open which begins 31 August looking for a calendar-year Grand Slam sweep, ahead of Evonne Goolagong and into fifth place in the all-time list.
